• Due to the Coronavirus, MHA indefinitely suspended the exercise to update the NPR and collection of data for Census 2021.
• This decision comes a day after PM Modi announced a 21-day lockdown to contain the spread of the virus.
• Many leaders and state govt requested the suspension of the NPR and census 2021 citing the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
• The states which have been opposing the NPR include Kerala, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar.
• Earlier the two exercises were to be conducted between April 1 and September 30, 2020.
